"Blue Jackets of '98 - A History of the Spanish-American War" by Willis John Abbot is an engrossing, well written tale of the United State's involvement in a short (8 month) war with Spain at the end of the 19 Century which is mistakenly neglected today. The lessons of that war were felt through the 20th Century and even to today.
The American people were worked into a frenzy by publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst over Spain's brutal treatment of indigenous peoples of Cuba. American went to war for noble causes, but found itself on a path of global imperialism ultimately acquiring such far reaching non-continental territory such as Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippine islands and even Hawaii. Not fighting a declared war since the Civil War, the US found itself with a tiny standing army armed with inferior weapons using black powder, providing winter uniforms for tropical use, and woefully inadequate medical facilities. The reason for US superiority on the battlefield was primarily due to Spanish preference for defense.
With an eerie echo of today's Afghanistan, the US rid the Philippine islands of one unwanted occupation force and replaced it with another (the US). After the Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American War, the US continued to fight Philippine insurgents for another dozen years, though most histories say it ended in just three. Six thousand miles from reporters, the American people forgot what was happening in the Philippines. It could have been a valuable lesson, if it had been remembered.
